A walk among the tombstones poster:

The main image is shown to be the main character of the movie. The shot is with the characters back to the camera. This can create an effective tone as stereotypically the main character will look at the camera connecting with them. The main character is holding a gun and a bag this creates a sense of mystery and violence and so the poster gives the audience an insight into the potential plot.

The colour of the poster is very simplistic but very very effective its black and white colours convey mystery and suspense. The setting of the poster is a graveyard which yet again conveys the idea of the film being about mystery and violence.  The pond in the background has also been filtered  to be a bloody red furthering conveying that idea of violence within the movie. The black and white filter used in this particular poster is something that i really liked about this poster and is something that i  may try implementing on my own poster.

The title of the movie is just above the character giving a connection to the movie and the character on the poster.  Its again giving a chilling intense feeling to the poster. The name of the main actor is also given just above the title of the movie. This tells the audience what type of movie it may be as Liam Neeson is known for his roles in action movies. This will tell the audience what to expect and that it won't be an average movie and will potentially be violent and intense movie.
The poster also uses a tagline at the top of the poster. This gives an insight into the stories narrative and gives a tagline for the makers of the film to promote and sell the movie whether they use the tagline on any promotions. One thing i liked about the tagline was that it plays on the audiences emotions that we're scared of the wrong things which means anything can happen and they won't know it but also they don't know what to be scared of.

Furthermore i liked the fact that the setting of the poster was located in a graveyard. Not only does this connect with the title "a walk among the tombstones" it also creates a sense of mystery and creepiness around the plot of the film as graveyards connote death and mystery which may creep the audience out. This type of setting is something that i very much like as it adds another layer of story telling to the poster so from this i may add my own location that is seen in the movie on my own poster.

I really was influenced by this poster and it is defiantly something that i will come back too for inspiration and guidance because i liked the layout of the poster and the colour of the poster.

Drafting and planning:Editing a short movie: "Monday"

This week I had the interesting task of editing a short movie to make it into our own style and format making the short movie into our own. The short movie that was given to us was more mysterious short movie. My aim was to try  and give the short movie a more of a thriller/horror feel. This was done so that I can gain more experience in how to edit and put the right type of sound into the movie so that I am more knowledgeable for it comes to making my own trailer.

To start off my task I obviously needed to start editing to get the right moments from the clip that I want to use. I clicked on 'multi-trim this allowed me to ensure that I got a more accurate clip that I wanted to get.
I then trimmed the clip to the exact moments that I wanted to be featured in my trailer. I changed completely the tone of my version. As I trimmed the clip so the ending was at the start. I changed the gun shot moment at the very end to the very start. This gave the trailer a more impactful and intense start that would immediately draw the audience into what is going on, on screen.

To then add to the overall of the short movie i decided to add some text to it just for the main purpose of that I could experiment and get to know the system and I have more knowledge about the system and its features. I added text to parts of the movie that said stuff like "Do I have your attention now" , I added text like this because first its a common feature that is commonly used but secondly it engages and communicates with the audience.

Then my next idea in the editing task was to add sound to the trailer to add more umpth to it and make it sound a bit more better. I wanted the music to be creepy but also make an impact. So I went with a music called "deep terror" at the start just to add to the creepy tone. I then also added a "sting" at the very end to make the climatic moments even more climatic and impactful. I also added another sound type called "war drum" this added to the impact and scene where the elevator goes down.

Overall this task was extremely helpful and useful to me. Because of this task i got a more advanced and clearer understanding into a programme that could be used for the making of my trailer. I managed to gain an understanding into various aspects like editing techniques and adding sound and text into the trailer, now i would be able to have some knowledge of what I'm doing when if i use this software for my own trailer instead of just going straight onto the software with no understanding so this task has also saved me time as well as giving me a better understanding of the software but also given me an insight into how trailers can be instructed.

Drafting and planning: Conventions of a film poster.

As well as developing and creating a moving image piece for my coursework which will be a film trailer, i am also required to create two ancillary products which will take the form of a film poster to go alongside the trailer and a front cover of a film magazine that will feature our magazine. Because of this it is vital that i take a look and research into some film posters to expand and gain a better understanding of film posters so i know what I'll be doing when it comes to creating my own piece.

So in this blog post i will aim to examine the common conventions of a film poster and then use my new found knowledge to examine and analyse a movie poster.

Conventions of the film poster:
The main aim of a film poster is to excite and captivate the audience and pull them into the movie. There will normally be a focal image that acts as the aim image that will attract the eye of the audience.  Commonly unless for a specific reason the title of the movie will be displayed in a large eye catching font. The film poster can tell the audience alot about the film. It should normally be able to tell the audience the genre of the film and also the basic plot of the movie.  There will normally be an indication of when the release of the film is, this will either contain a specific date or a "coming soon". Smaller details will also be included such as a production block and if the director is a well known director it will say the name of the director.

  • Image: The main image normally contains the main character or characters that are used to intrigue and captivate the audiences into looking at the film poster and so then being engaged into the film as a whole.
  • The film title: This is the title of the film and is used so that the audience know what the film is called an can give an insight into a films tone, genre and even plot.
  • Tagline: These can emphasis something to do with the film and also be used to sell the movie as it can be used on all promotional images and trailers.
  • Ratings: These can persuade an audience to go and watch a movie if its shown that other people like the movie and its good. If critics like the movie than it might tell the consumers that its worth the watch as it might be a good movie.
  • Director of the movie: Sometimes the poster will display the director of the movie for example "a James Cameron movie" or  a "Steven Spielberg" this normally happens if the director of the movie is well known and can tell the audience that the film has been directed by a well known professional director that knows what he is doing and the film is in safe hands and it should be a good movie.
  • Awards: Like the ratings awards can act as a way to get the audience more interested in a film as they'll see that the film must be good if its won awards and so might be worth seeing.
  • Actors: If there is any well known actors they are displayed at the top, it can attract the audience as it might be an actor that the audiences enjoys or a familiar with a type of genre.

One thing that immediately jumped out to me in this trailer was the beginning of it. The trailer starts with narration. I really liked this added feature as it lets the audience get to know the main protagonist/ antagonist and get an idea of their thoughts, standing in the movie or just their motives. It acts as a way to connect the character to the audience and give them an insight into this particular film world.

The editing of this particular trailer is quite well done apart from a couple of shots the editing is quite fast and cuts from shot to shot relatively fast. This creates a sense of tension and keeps the audience guessing as to whats going on next as everything is going on so fast It gives the trailer quite an unsettling tone which is a feeling that the trailer makers would clearly want to give off to the audience. The trailer also uses a technique known as the hip- hop montage which gives the trailer a series of shots shown in fast motion with accompanying sound effects.

The cinematography is also something i liked within in this trailer,  the trailer seems to carry a grey filter with it all throughout the trailer, this filter gives the trailer a more sinister atmosphere this is because the filter dulls out colours which seems to signify trying to dull out the signifiers of happiness. Within the trailer mainly black and white are used including the the costumes and the decorations, this may show that the setting is a dark, intense and sinister place or acts as a way to represent something (ballet) as being intense and sinister. The shot i particularly picked out was at the very start of the trailer where we see the main character (Natalie Portman) in a extreme long shot which also highlights how she is the main character letting the audience know straight away. The shot shows  the main character dancing under a spotlight under intense darkness, the spot light and her dress is very bright in comparison to the darkness around her. This can connote the binary opposites of good and bad but may also tell the audience that the main character is dealing with a dark and mysterious side that is quite menacing and dangerous and she is constantly plagued with doing write or wrong something the trailer goes into detail in. I like how this single shot can reveal so much about a character and her story arc something i am very interested in trying for my own trailer to create an immediate impact with the audience.

Another aspect of the trailer that i really liked was the aspect of the sound, the main type of sound that is used in the trailer is orchestral music which creates an eerie and mysterious feel to the trailer. The music  just perfectly adds to the trailer adding to the plot and making the trailer more sinister going along with what it is trying to achieve. Another aspect of sound that is used is the diegetic sound, this is mainly used through the example of dialogue. The dialogue within the trailer is perfect for adding to the thriller with lines such as "attack it". Throughout the trailer there is a constant use of whispers which creates a chilling tone with the repeating of "sweet girl". The use of something as simple as whispers is something that has interested me and something i did like in this trailer just because of how chilling and actually scary they can act as well as being successful at adding to a trailers tone and feeling.

One thing that immedialty jumped out to me was use of close ups, i like this camera shot type in these genre of movies as it shows the emotion of the character that is being shown which is really effective as its right in the audiences face and they can see their motives and any expression they may have. These type of shots also act to intensify the moment and the scene that it is in.

So overall i can say i was actually really impressed with this trailer and found alot of attributes of the trailer very influential. There were some aspects that i defiantly will come back too to look at again for my own trailer for inspiration. Such areas i was inspired by was defiantly the cinematography as the cinematography and the lighting will defiantly be able to set my trailer apart and make it stand out.

The soundtrack of this trailer was something that really appealed to me, the trailer starts with a quite a innocent and childish music which creates quite the childish atmosphere. This can either create a false sense of security for the audience immediately within the trailer making them more susceptible to any scares later on in the trailer. Or they may use this as perhaps they know that audiences will expect the trailer to try and lead them into a false sense of security so instead will actually lead the audience to being more on edge and so engaged in the story that the trailer is giving to the audience. After the childlike music has played there is a sudden bass drop in the trailer giving the trailer that impactful moment and giving the trailer a more sinister and dark tone that it was originally hiding. After this bass drop there is an increase in pitch with a screeching sound,  this acts as a way to frighten and shock the audiences with such a sudden change in music. The sound then completely  disappears again leaving the trailer in silence, this leaves the audience in the dark making them feel that anything can happen and anxious with to what to expect.

Camera work is also used very effectivley within this trailer. One camera type that is used is the tracking shot, this is used at the beginning of the trailer, this type of shot extends the time that the audience are left waiting and are guessing for what is going to happen next, leaving the audience in mysterious circumstances as they're expecting something to happen but simply don't know when it is going to happen.  Another shot i particularly liked was the point of view shot, this is effective as it gives the audience an insight into the main characters thoughts and interests and motives within the trailer. It keeps the audience captivated into the story arc of the trailer. Most of the shots that are used are actually quite close typse shots like close ups or long angle shot, this is so that the audience is pulled in very close to what is being represented at that time and being able to see the emotions of the character/characters.

The editing of the trailer is also very appealing to me as a influence, at the start of the trailer the editing is quite slow paced letting the audience take in whats happening and creating a really uneasy tone within the trailer. The editing then really picks up making an impact and cutting from scene to scene really fast. This means that the audience are not able to process all the information in the scenes  so they're left trying to piece together all the information that has been given to them.

via GIPHY This editing technique is a really good technique that is used in the trailer,  It gives us an insight into the characters unstable mind set. It gives the trailer a more sinister turn captivating and engaging the audience into the trailer. I really liked this editing technique and its something that i do believe will intrigue to try and experiment with in my own trailer to try it myself.
  • Trailer length: 2:30 minutes long
Overall i really did like this trailer mainly for its use of sound manipulation and how it can create a scene and make it more impactful to the audience with its use of bass and pitching.

Research into similar products: "Blood on my name"

As said in my previous blog post i am going to fully utilise the oppurtunty to include a song onto my trailer so it would only make sense for me to go and research some songs that can be included in the song.

The main factor that pulled me towards looking at this song was the overall feel and beat of the song. Its starts off slow and mysterious but by the end of the song the song is incredibly fast and creates a really effective feel for the song making it have that impactful tone that a song in a trailer really needs. The song constantly keeps you engaged throughout the whole song reading into the message and story of the song.

As stated before i only have 12 seconds that i can actually use some of the song for the trailer, because of this i need to make sure that i pick the right part of the song to be included in my trailer.
The part of the song that id consider using within my trailer is between "3:27 and 4:08". Although this time scale clearly goes over the 12 second limit I'm aiming to to cut a-lot of this out to get the best parts into the song and to also make sure its within the time limit i have.

The lyrics that i want to include from the song are as followed:

"When the fires, when the fires has surrounded you

with the hounds of hell coming after you
i've got blood, i've got blood on my name
i've got blood, blood on my name"

I picked these lyrics because i believe these are the lyrics that have the most impact in my trailer, this is because these lyrics talk about being surrounded and having the "hounds of hell"  coming after you, these are the perfect lyrics for the type of trailer i want to do (the thriller).
One main thing that pulled me towards this song was the overall beat of the song as it starts slow and gets faster meaning any part of the song can be used in trailer. Like i said before I'm really a fan of the lyrics and the story they convey, this is because they fit with perfectly with the genre of film trailer I'm trying to make.
The entire song just conveys a mysterious creepy tone that is able to captivate the audience instantly and keep them entertained.

Research into similar products: "You want it darker"- Leonard Cohen

For my trailer I want to take full use of the opportunity to include a song. This is down to the thought that with the song I can make my trailer more effective and simply put I can hopefully make it better.

One thing that pulled towards this song is that the song is incredibly slow but still so effective and the message it carries along to the viewer is effective and clear. Its tone and its beats create a mysterious feel around the song but a feel that keeps you engaged, this is the type of notion i want to happen within my trailer, making tone mysterious but keeps them wanting to watch, this is something i believe the song pulls of perfectly.  The eeriness and creepy tone of the artists voice only adds to song and its story.

As i have only 12 seconds of the song to use within my trailer i'll have to make sure that the part that i do use is extremely effective and works well within my trailer to add to it and make it better and add to the overall essence of the trailer. Because of this if i do choose to use this particular song than the part i will use will be:

"Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name

Vilified, crucified, in the human frame
A million candles burning for the love that never came
You want it darker
We kill the flame"

These are the lyrics that id chose to include within my trailer, i picked this part in the song as its when the song is reaching its ultimate climax so the strong beat within the song is picking up which would match with the trailer as the closing minute or so is when things start to pick up. But secondly the lyrics that i chose out are for me extremely effective. As my trailer is either going to take the genre of a thriller or a horror i felt that not only the beat and the feel of the song went well these particular lyrics did so too. They carry a mysterious and yet creepy vibe to them. They lyrics talk about religious iconography such 'sanctified, holy and crucified' gives the audience an uneasy feeling and perhaps can even make them feel uncomfortable. The lyrics also mention two things that the audience may find scary such as the darkness and love that never comes. Such lyrics can play on the audiences emotions.
If i were to pick this song to be included i think one positive of using it is use if lyrics and beat that convey the mysterious and creepy tone that the carries on throughout the entirety of the song. However there as some negatives to using this song is that perhaps it isn't fast enough and can come across as quite boring and so maybe the song doesn't have that definitive impact that a song used in a trailer would commonly need.

Research into similar products:Research into the horror genre

As stated in a previous blog post i am heavily leaning on the idea of having it follow the genre of either thriller or horror and as in my previous blog post i took my research into the thriller genre it was only fitting that i took a look into the horror movie.

The horror genre aims to create a sense of fear, panic, alarm and dread for the audience. The films in the horror genre often have a unsettling tone and rely on scaring the audience through the portrayal of the their worst fears. They normally centre on the arrival of an evil entity, person or evil force. Horror movies even incorporate mythical things like ghosts and that of the supernatural and include large amounts of gore and violence. Horror can be connected through a hybrid into the thriller genre.

Most horror movies tries to play with the audiences emotions and so the genre will try to prey on the following aspects.
  • Nightmares- Something everyone experiences.
  • Vulnerability- Inability to withstand the effects of a hostile environment.
  • Alienation- Being alone is one of the scariest thoughts for most people.
  • Fear of the unknown- Not knowing whats going to happen- can be as simple as a low lit room.
  • Death- The inevitable and also the unknown.
  • Loss of identity- Losing everything you once were.
Setting:
It is often set in a small urban community or an isolated place. Dark (low key lighted) settings. The setting likes to connotes  the idea of being alone and isolated. Most often the setting will have a 'dark history' connected to it. Most common horror movie settings are forests, any type of abandoned building, small urban communities or even the bigger cities. Most settings are further away from communities as this ploy so that the protagonist won't be able to run for help.

Camera work:
  • High angle shot- This type of shot makes the object or person look incredibly vulnerable and powerless.
  • Close up shot- This is used to see the reaction and emotion that is on the characters face. This shot can also capture detail in an important scene.
  • Tracking- Simply this shot connotes movement within the movie world. This type of shot is used very effectively in the horror genre as it could imply that someone is being followed or watched.
  • Tilted angle- Can add a-lot of dramatic tension to the scene. One of the great examples that horror movies use this shot as if the camera is a character lying on the floor and you see what they see. It can also be used to get a different shot across to the audience.
  • Long shot- To establish the movies setting or establish the scene.
  • Low angle shot- Can make the main antagonist seem even more intimidating or scary to the audience, can make the character below the villain or even the audience feel weak and insignificant.
  • Hand held camera- Adds a sense of reality to the movie, make it seem like it really happened.
Mise en scene
The film often uses props to promote the idea of it being a horror and to also spook the audience, can add to a scene and make it more dark and sinister. Lighting in a horror usually follows the idea of it being more pulled back and the colours not being too extravagant, by the colours being more low-key it gives it a more 'sad' and sombre mood.

Iconography:
Most horror movies uses this technique with objects that the audience can relate too. They usually have aspects like ghostly figures, dark places and unusual things happening such as doors slamming etc. In the case of supernatural horrors there is normally a priest who comes in to solve the dark story.
Visual style- Colours like red and black which can imply and link to evil, blood and danger. The low-key lighting can represent the dark tone. Props can also be featured.

Character types:
The main protagonist- Often the victim or hero of the movie.
The main villain- Often a monster or mutated freak.

Technical codes:
  • Camera work is very expensive and not natural; high and low an angle connotes fear.
  • POV shots are important because they allow the audience to see the world from the monsters eyes.
  • Sometimes framework uses depth of field, makes it harder to see the monster creeping up.

Research into similar products: Reasearch into the thriller genre.

As for my trailer i'm leaning heavily on making it either a horror or thriller i thought it would only be natural to do some research into both genres so that i have the basic understanding of the genre so i know what i will be working with.

What is the thriller genre.

"Thriller film, also known as suspense film or suspense thriller, is a broad film genre that invokes excitement and suspense in the audience. The suspense element, found in most films' plots, is particularly exploited by the filmmaker in this genre. Tension is created by delaying what the audience sees as inevitable, and is built through situations that are menacing or where escape seems impossible".

The ultimate aim of the thriller genre is to create suspense and excitement for the audience. They're often set in busy urban streets. Violence and mystery is normally the main component of the genre. The genre aims to try and keep the audience in suspense but also alert and anticipation.

Common conventions of the thriller trailer:

  • Low key lighting
  • Quick cuts
  • Shadows
  • Tension music
  • Black and white shots
  • Montages.
Characters
The protagonist is often a brave male who seeks to restore peace where as the antagonists will commonly have a unknown identity until the third act of the movie.

Theme
The plot of a thriller is normally a plot that is realistic and so the audience can supposedly relate to the plot which can create more suspense and worry for them as it could happen to them creating a more eery feel for the movie.

Cinematography
There is normally loads of close ups of the protagonists face to highlight his emotion or to highlight a specific importance of a prop within the trailer.

Editing
It will normally include loads of jump cuts as in a thriller there is normally loads of aspects happening that the audience is unaware of but is essential for it to make sense. Cross cutting is also very heavily used as cross cutting can create the suspense that the thriller is built upon.

Sound
Music is one of the more important aspects of the thriller genre as the music can add the suspense, drama and mystery that the thriller needs. In a scene the music will often start to be integrated slow and slowly build and build for the moment of climax.

Mise en scene
The location is very important for the thriller because it can immediately help the audience establish the mood and theme of the trailer. The lighting will often be low-key lighting to go with the natural sombre tone of the thriller genre.

To start off the analysis what i love especially about this trailer is how the trailer revolves around to simple objects that normally are seen as innocent objects but this certain instance the trailer flips this and uses the idea of a clown and a balloon to make the trailer scarier and spookier, as normally these are seen as fun things to have but it plays with our scenes as we are not used to being scared of the objects. So the trailer really plays with our senses making the innocent objects seem really sinister.

The one thing that really gets to me with this trailer is its use of setting that can carry and create fear for the audiences such as children going  missing but also abandoned houses that really try to effect the audience as these are things that can effect people outside of the context of the film. and the tagline that the trailer uses "what are you scared of" really plays on the audience as it can make them feel that they can be effected by the movie playing with their emotions.

The trailer really starts with a really slow and toned down sombre mood that can make the audience feel uneasy and unsure how to react to the trailer being shown because it feels like anything can happen. But as the trailer picks up things start to get faster and more tense, this is especially shown through the trailer picking up with sound and its editing picking up really fast to really create suspense and make the audience feel nervous.

Like most of the trailers that I've analysed this trailer really succeeds at the sound, at the beginning of the trailer the music is quite slow and seems innocent but towards the end of the trailer the music really hits a chord, the music seems unnatural really allowing it to hit a chord and build up the tensity of the trailer and making the audience feel on edge and more slightly nervous.  The music really allows the audience to engage in the idea that this is a horror movie with the sound feeling really weird and it encourages the audiences to actually be scared of the movie and to feel worried to actually go watch it.

The trailer uses a variety of fast paced and slow paced editing. The use of fast paced editing allows the trailer to feel more on edge as everything moves so fast not giving you a chance to take things in making you feel uncomfortable. On the other hand the slow paced editing is also as equally effective as by keeping each scene on for longer period of time gives the trailer a more un-natural feel as you feel like something could or should happen but doesn't further leaving you in a state of worry and uneasiness as you feel like somethings if going to happen.

What the trailer does here is quite effective in terms of its camera work it starts in a home in various close ups, however when it transitions over to the outside the trailer uses a variety of wide and long shots allowing the audience to take in the fact that this is happening in a place that people of the audience would know very well; a residential area making the audience feel that this could really happen to you allowing the audience to be able to quickly connect with this particular movie world as it's a setting that we all know and are use to. From here the trailer uses the normal conventions of a horror movie in terms of using close ups of mid-shots mainly as this allows the audience to really see the emotion on the characters faces.

Another thing that i particularly like is its use or lack of use of the main antagonist, throughout the trailer "it" is only ever mentioned or seen very quickly (not enough for the audience to really see him) this i believe is an amazing technique that is used as it enables the trailer to create a certain mystery and a certain degree of awe around him that you scared of this character without even seeing him making the point when you do see him even more scarier. This technique simply allows the trailer to revolve around mystery and suspense leaving the audience in the dark around the trailer as they don't know what to be scared off.

So to take from this trailer i can really say that i'm influenced by its use of its main character and antagonist. By making not appear so much in the trailer it really adds this layer of suspense to the trailer cause you do not get to see the character so you do not know what your expecting making this awe around the character cause you never know when he's going to appear or even what he looks like. Furthermore i also like how this trailer uses really simple and "innocent" objects to further add to the scary and spookiness of the film. This is because you never really expect something so simple to carry such creepiness to it making all the more spooky for the audience. Finally I'm also influenced by the sound as i have been with with most trailers that I've looked at just because of how it adds to the trailer and makes it so much better.

One thing that immediately stuck out to my with this trailer was how it juxtapositions itself from the beginning to the end of the trailer. The start of the trailer starts off as a sort of 'kind' trailer and with the name of the movie called fool audiences into making them believe that this was in fact perhaps a romantic movie. However by the end of the trailer that clearly isn't the case as the trailer takes a dark and sinister turn that is able to captivate the audience. This is something i believe is extremely clever and something i believe can and will influence my trailer as it takes the audience on a emotional rollercoaster with them not knowing what to expect from the trailer.
The trailer also decides to promote this trailer by not giving too much away in terms of plot, as judging by trailer the only known facts that we the audience are given is that there is a happy couple who are visited by strangers and from there the trailer just gets darker and darker. This is a great way to market the trailer as it'll make the audience want to see the movie so that they know what its all about. The trailer is really brilliant creating the idea of suspense and not allowing the audience to guess whats going to happen leaving them in the unknown.

One of the strongest aspects of this trailer is the sound. The sound is brilliant at its job which is clearly trying to maintain and create the suspense leaving the audience in the unknown. The music has a disturbing tone to it that makes audience feel nervous and uncomfortable which can relate to the movie as theres clearly something disturbing going on with the movies plot. The soundtrack used in the trailer is something that has inspired me and influenced already as its the type of music that id look to use in my trailer, music that can put the audience on edge and really get them engaged into the movies plot.

The cinematography of the film is also something of beauty as the colour of the film feels just ever so slightly drained back and has quite the retro feel yet again giving the movie a unique, un-natural and unsettling feeling.

Another thing this trailer does so well is its use of camera work, for the majority of the trailer the camera techniques that is mostly used is either a close up or a mid-shot, what makes this work so well it that not only does it allow you to see the characters emotions up close giving it a unsettling feel but also it traps you within that camera frame is seeing just mainly the face and or body which restricts your view of the scene further going along with the idea of the audience not knowing too much about the movies plot and making sure the audience doesn't really know whats going on. By using these restrictive camera angles it means that when the trailer does show a different shot its impactful and really stands out.

The editing of the trailer is also impactful as the trailer mainly uses the technique of fast paced editing although a very simple technique in this trailer the editings fast paced adds to unsettling tone and makes you feel uncomfortable with how fast the trailer is moving along, additionally the fast paced editing doesn't allow the audience to really understand a particular scene not allowing them to take everything in.

Overall i believe this is a great trailer and a trailer that i believe i will be looking at when the time comes to shoot my own trailer as there are many things that can influence me in terms of sound and also keeping things pulled back so that the audience doesn't really get the fully picture making them want to re-watch and eventually watch the movie as there intrigued by the events that has happened in the trailer.

Drafting and planning: How to make a successful trailer

As my initial plan is to make a movie trailer for my A2 course it became obvious to me that before i even know what my trailer is going to feature and be about, i need to understand what makes a successful trailer so that i understand and know how to properly make a trailer to the best of my ability. To understand my how a trailer may become successful i did some research finding some sites that give me an incredible insight into how to make a trailer successful.

It became clear to me quite quickly the simple formula that most trailers seem to follow and that is to "start fast and end big". The whole aim of a trailer is to hook people immediately this can be through dialogue, a dynamic scene or a powerful music score. From here the trailer needs to escalate so if making a comedy the trailer needs to get funnier or if a horror trailer then the trailer needs to get creepier and scarier as the trailer goes on. The ending of the trailer is one of the biggest aspects of the trailer as its normally the part of the trailer that audiences remember and can ultimately hype an audience more for the movie.

Its also quite clear that its vitally important to try and make your trailer original due to most movies copying other movies through spinoffs, sequels and prequels the market place can become quite repetitive so i should try and pick moments out where its original, unique and more importantly stands out from other stuff out there. Because of this its important to find the defining moment for a trailer while most trailers try and cram in all best bits from a trailer to sell the movie but what is equally important is to find something with a great look or a great line of dialogue that won't just advance the story but promote it while being really funny or uniquely scary.

Vital aspects of a trailer:

Sound- Sound is something that is very important to a trailer it can represent the genre of a film and can be used to emphasise certain points of the trailer. Sound can elevate certain scenes adding importance to them.
Editing- The flow and continuity of a trailer can make or break it. A good trailer will be able to effortlessly flow between scenes.
