One thing that immediately jumped out to me in this trailer was the beginning of it. The trailer starts with narration. I really liked this added feature as it lets the audience get to know the main protagonist/ antagonist and get an idea of their thoughts, standing in the movie or just their motives. It acts as a way to connect the character to the audience and give them an insight into this particular film world.
The editing of this particular trailer is quite well done apart from a couple of shots the editing is quite fast and cuts from shot to shot relatively fast. This creates a sense of tension and keeps the audience guessing as to whats going on next as everything is going on so fast It gives the trailer quite an unsettling tone which is a feeling that the trailer makers would clearly want to give off to the audience. The trailer also uses a technique known as the hip- hop montage which gives the trailer a series of shots shown in fast motion with accompanying sound effects.
The cinematography is also something i liked within in this trailer, the trailer seems to carry a grey filter with it all throughout the trailer, this filter gives the trailer a more sinister atmosphere this is because the filter dulls out colours which seems to signify trying to dull out the signifiers of happiness. Within the trailer mainly black and white are used including the the costumes and the decorations, this may show that the setting is a dark, intense and sinister place or acts as a way to represent something (ballet) as being intense and sinister. The shot i particularly picked out was at the very start of the trailer where we see the main character (Natalie Portman) in a extreme long shot which also highlights how she is the main character letting the audience know straight away. The shot shows the main character dancing under a spotlight under intense darkness, the spot light and her dress is very bright in comparison to the darkness around her. This can connote the binary opposites of good and bad but may also tell the audience that the main character is dealing with a dark and mysterious side that is quite menacing and dangerous and she is constantly plagued with doing write or wrong something the trailer goes into detail in. I like how this single shot can reveal so much about a character and her story arc something i am very interested in trying for my own trailer to create an immediate impact with the audience.
Another aspect of the trailer that i really liked was the aspect of the sound, the main type of sound that is used in the trailer is orchestral music which creates an eerie and mysterious feel to the trailer. The music just perfectly adds to the trailer adding to the plot and making the trailer more sinister going along with what it is trying to achieve. Another aspect of sound that is used is the diegetic sound, this is mainly used through the example of dialogue. The dialogue within the trailer is perfect for adding to the thriller with lines such as "attack it". Throughout the trailer there is a constant use of whispers which creates a chilling tone with the repeating of "sweet girl". The use of something as simple as whispers is something that has interested me and something i did like in this trailer just because of how chilling and actually scary they can act as well as being successful at adding to a trailers tone and feeling.
One thing that immedialty jumped out to me was use of close ups, i like this camera shot type in these genre of movies as it shows the emotion of the character that is being shown which is really effective as its right in the audiences face and they can see their motives and any expression they may have. These type of shots also act to intensify the moment and the scene that it is in.
So overall i can say i was actually really impressed with this trailer and found alot of attributes of the trailer very influential. There were some aspects that i defiantly will come back too to look at again for my own trailer for inspiration. Such areas i was inspired by was defiantly the cinematography as the cinematography and the lighting will defiantly be able to set my trailer apart and make it stand out.
