Organisation: Scene list.

Above is the table which goes into detail the scenes that will be included in my trailer. This of course is subject to change as after the first draft the scenes may change depending on my own personal opinion  and also what my teacher may say.

Again i wanted to take a look into movie posters so that when the time comes to making my own i know what to do and hat to include. In this post i will be looking into the poster from the movie "insidious".

The colour that is used within the poster are the colours that are stereotypically used within the horror genre as the colours of black and grey normally convey a visual representation of horror and terror associating the movie to evil and possession.

The low-key lightning of the poster highlights how something dark is happening with the boy and this is something that would intrigue the audience as they wouldn't expect a child to be seen as dark and evil and so creating a sense of mystery and intrigue and also fear for the movie.

The camera shot used in the poster is really effective. The mid shot really creates a sense of fear as the use of the child really makes the whole poster feel extra creepy as no one would expect the child to be shown in this format.

What i like about the poster is its title. Even its design is different as it is placed going upwards which gives the poster a different look and feel but i also like how there is two different colours used on the poster. The red and the white can be used to symbolise two different things. The red can be used to symbolise the blood and horror while the white can be used to represent heaven. This can then represent Roland Barthes theory of good vs evil which would then connect to what is going on in the poster itself with the boy clearly being possessed by some sort of evil being.

This is another poster in which i wanted to take a look into because of all the cool aspects that is used within the poster.

One thing that i really liked from the poster was its subtle use of high key lighting. The way that it used is so that the audience can recognise the isolated setting of the poster being the forest covered in mist. All of these aspects put together really create a feeling of tension, fear and suspension all of which intrigue the audience into the movie but also may creep them out.

Typography:
The title of the movie is coloured in red which has many connotations and establishes the blood, gore and violence and horror that may occur within the movie all of which then tell the audience that this movie is a horror movie. The very title of the movie also creates a-lot of mystery as they will want to know what 'Friday the 13th" signifies and what it means generating buzz and mystery.

Colours:
The colours used in the poster perfectly represent the colours that are colours that stereotypically used  in a horror type movie. The poster is full of dark and gloomy colours to perfectly represent the genre of the movie.

Rule of thirds:
I really like how the main figure on the poster is positioned his body language and his position in the middle of the page signifies his strong presence within the movie and heightens the sensations of fear, dread and anxiety.

Props and iconography:
As seen in the poster the main figure is seen to be holding a weapon which signifies the violence that may occur in the movie. I also really like how the main figure is shown to be masked making a sense of mystery around the character as the audience don't know who is behind the mask or what his motives are.

So again i really like this poster and what it represents. i really liked how the poster blends all the colours and lightings together to really create a harrowing and tense poster that intrigues the audience into watching the movie.

Research into similar products: Sinister.

In this blog post i will be taking another look into movie posters so that i can get a better understanding of typical conventions of a movie poster and so that maybe i can get some inspiration for my own trailer. In this post i will be looking into the poster of the movie 'sinister'.

One reason i chose to do analysis of this particular poster was that i liked its simple very but very effective design.

The title of the poster is very conventional for a horror poster situated in the centre of the poster and is coloured in black to give  it that dark creepy feel. I like how the title looks smeared as if it is dripping blood which correlates with the main image below it.  This type of design is something that i could very much use in my own poster as my trailer has a-lot to do with the shadows i could either use this particular effect or add a shadow effect just to give the title some added effect and make it seem part of the narrative of the poster.

The background of the poster is extremely dull and grim which allows the image to contrast heavily and put more focus onto the image. The main image of the poster is really effective and is something that i really like. The main image is what sells the movie and here it is done effectively portraying a really disturbing and creepy image to the audience. Aided by the tagline    "once you see him nothing can save you", the whole image just gives a very fearful and scary atmosphere. The image also creates a shroud of mystery as the audience wants to know what is going on but also the fact that the face shown in the poster is looking directly at the audience which just adds to the creepiness. When thinking of how i can incorporate this type of design on my poster i can very much again relate it all to the shadows by maybe having a figure in the poster and then somewhere in the shadows there is another figure or face shown in the shadows. The very graphic nature of the main image with all the blood immediately tells the audience what film this is going to be and also sets the target audience up immediately. The film does not give much away about the plot allowing the movie to be shrouded in mystery.

With any other film at the top of the poster displays the directors previous work. By doing this the audience know what the movie could entail and by displaying the previous work tells the audience that if they liked the previous movies they will like this movie.

I also very much like the tagline of the poster "Once you see him, nothing can save you".  This is a perfect tagline as it may tell the audience something that is important to the plot of the movie. The tagline also relates to the main image below.

So i really liked this poster and is something that i will definately look back upon because of it's very simple design that perfectly sums up the movie and the genre.

In this blog post i will be looking into the poster for the movie 'paranormal activity'.

One thing that i really liked about the poster was the direct mode of address not from the characters but instead the tagline of the movie "what happens when you sleep". I found this to be very effective as its immersing the audience in the movie and making them on edge and makes them contemplate what they know or think they know.  It makes them question what is going on in their own lives allowing them to believe that what is going on in the movie could actually happen in real life and to them.
This is furthered by the main image of the poster.  The poster is made to look as if it was a cctv footage. This adds to the overall realism of the movie and makes it seem like it actually happened which makes the poster more intense and more creepy.

The poster adopts quite a simple but yet effective colour scheme of black, white and red. Although simple the colour scheme is very effective as the colours connote death, mystery and fear.

Research into similar products: Insidious

In this blog post i will be taking a look into the trailer for the movie "insidious".

Camera work:
The trailer for insidious features a variety of different camera shots that perfectly feature in the horror genre.  One example of an effective camera shot that was used in the trailer was an extreme close up. This can be done for a variety of reasons such as to make an intense scene and to also make the audience uncomfortable.  The extreme close up is used very effective as it is used on the shot of the old women face. This can show the importance of the character that is in the frame. What i like about the extreme close up is that it is showing the character is looking up showing that what ever she is looking at is powerful.
Another shot that is used in the trailer is an long shot. The shot takes place near the beginning of the trailer and acts as an establishing shot revealing where the movie takes place giving them a sense of security and a sense of awe.  The establishing shot allows the audience to see where the storyline of the film is taking place.

This shot is a shot that i really like because of how it is executed. The way that it is shot draws the audiences attention towards the arm in the corner of the frame.  The fact that the shot is also a POV shot as it immerses the audience into the scene making them feel part of the scene making the scene feel more creepy as they feel as they are apart of it.

Mise en scene:
Mise en scene is another aspect that i very much liked within this trailer as it fits with the horror genre very well.  One thing that i thought that was very effective about the mise en scene was the costumes used within the trailer. The two main characters are dressed in simple clothes showing the simplicity of the family and showing the audience that are very much like them and so this could happen to anyone making the trailer much more creepy.  There is also a part where costumes is used on two little girls dressed in 19th century clothing further adding to the horror of the film as this seems to suggest that the two girls are dead and are ghosts making it more horrific.

Another piece of costume that i thought was effective was the use of a mask.  It creates an unnatural appearance and leaves the audience not knowing what to expect as they do not know who or what is behind the mask so the audience cannot create a connection with them. (The use of masks is something that i want to include in my own trailer so it was good to see another trailer use them).
This trailer like most other horror trailers is filmed in a small amount of settings.  In this particular trailer there is only 3 settings which is the house, the hospital and the "further". Two of these settings i thought was very effective as it is two places that is meant to be full of comfort and security but in this trailer that is flipped and instead it is made out to be scary and probably not the safest place to be. This makes the trailer more scary as its settings that the audience will know and make them feel it could happen to them.

Editing:
Editing is done really well in this trailer. Throughout the trailer they use the conventional slow paced editing which leaves the audience on edge as they do not know when something scary is going to appear and leads them into a false sense of security as when something scary does happen they won't of guessed it. The trailer also uses the conventional fast paced editing in which also makes the trailer seem more creepy as the audience cannot take everything in and are left wanting more.

Editing was also done very well on this particular scene.  I like how the edges has been darkened off to create are really creepy and old look making it stand out.  This leads the audience into believing the hope is lost and the impending darkness.

Sound:
The sound is also another feature that is done really well with the trailer. I really liked the inclusion of the metronome sound that plays throughout. It makes the trailer seem more edgy and intense and makes you feel that anything could happen at anytime.

Organisation: Final filming dates.

Because of the snow and because of the fact that my actors were not free the past couple of weeks i had to re do the planned the shooting dates. The only time that i know everyone will be free will be the two weeks off that we have coming up.

Within this break i will have more time to get the filming done. I only have 3 small scenes to film in this time period so it shouldn't set me back too much and i should be able to get them done with ease and done quickly.

Within this time period i plan to film on the 30th and the 31st of December. This is the best possible time to shot the scenes because it will be well after the Christmas and boxing day period so it is most likely that we will all be free to do.

Scenes to shoot:
  1. A wide shot of the main protagonist walking down a street.
  2. Variety of shots of the main protagonist and his companion walking through a graveyard in the night with torches.
  3. A variety of different shots and scenes including the main protagonist and antagonists main meeting and conflict together.
  4. The scene with main antagonist and his followers one with just the main guy standing in the frame of the camera and after a flash a scene with his followers appearing out of the main antagonist.
  5. The scene where the main antagonist drags the main protagonist into the darkness.
I hope to film these short scenes on the filming dates specified above and with those scenes done my trailer should be done and ready for editing.

Research into similar products: The grey

One thing that immediately stuck out to me from this poster was the simplicity of it.  The poster simply just has an extreme close up of the main character and it is snowing. By just having one main subject of the poster is very effective as it straight away tells the audience who/what the film is about.
I like how in the poster the subject is looking at the camera and is so effectively looking at the audience. By doing this it creates a connection between them and the film immersing the audience into then film making them feel they are part of it. The layout especially with the bruised up character makes the poster seem more interesting and intriguing pulling the audience into watching the movie.

I also very much like the inclusion of the snow as it adds a cold feel to the poster and makes it more effective and makes the poster seem more realistic

I like how the poster has been filtered so that the colour has been de-saturated to give it a more grey and cold like colour which matches with not only the title of the film but also so that it matches with the setting of the poster which is snow making the poster seem that more effective but also that much more colder which may suggest a lot of things to the audience such as is the character in some sort of danger.

The title of the poster is also included so that the audience knows what the movie is called and is in bold capital letters so that audiences can identify it easily. One aspect of the poster that i did like was the tagline for the movie it features just below the film and adds a lot of mystery to the movie. "Live and die on this die". I like how even the tagline doesn't give to much away about the movie but is very effective as it makes the audience raise questions about the movie such as what does it mean and what is it about and is the main character okay and safe and what happens to him.

So overall i really liked this poster because of its simplicity of portraying the plot and the character. This is something that i will look back on for my own poster as with my own poster i want to create something thats more simple and effective rather than a poster that has loads of things going on within it.

Research into similar products: Ancillary products: Empire magazine

Up until now i have only really dedicated my time to the film trailer that i will be creating so i thought that now it would be a good time to look into what my magazine would look like and who would be making it.

For my magazine i have chosen EMPIRE magazine would be the most suitable magazine for my film.

Empire magazine features reviews on the worlds mainstream movies and art films. This allows it to be appealing to a wide variety of all audiences. What i liked is that empire does issues on movies from all types of movie genres such as action, comedy and horror/thriller which of course makes it perfect for my film.  My film is not an small independent movie which i felt made it not suitable for "little white lies" and also my film is not the big Hollywood blockbuster made by "total film" and is incase something in the middle so i felt that Empire magazine would be the perfect chose to represent and promote the movie.

So now that i have chosen empire magazine to be creating the front cover of my magazine i decided to look into previous covers specifically those of the thriller/horror genre.

So when looking into empires magazine covers these covers were the ones that stuck out immediately to me due to their use of colours and conventions. The magazine as you can see usually has a large masthead so the audience can identify the magazine and some issues the main image will slightly cover the masthead. There are also cover lines included and the amount depends on what the overall front cover is designed like. Obviously i will need to do some more research into empire magazine and also film magazine conventions as a whole.

Research into similar products: Blair witch project poster

The aspect that immediately stuck out to me from this poster was the extreme close up of the women. The shots closeness can create unease for the audience as it is not a typical shot for a poster. i also very much like the hand held style that is also shown in the trailer as it furthers the narrative the film being more realistic and more of a documentary instead of a film. The shot shows the fear and panic on the characters face and its closeness to the camera makes the person feel trapped. The direct mode of address makes the audience feel as though they are there in the movie. The handheld style of the poster creates audience interactivity and it is unconventional telling the audience straight away that this movie is going to be unique and special.

I also like how the shot of the women is surrounded in blackness which adds to the mystery of the of the whole poster.  It also suggests the horror in the horror in the movie. Furthermore i like how the poster transitions from the darkness to the tress in the forest which tells the audience where the movie is set.

Furthermore i liked the text that is situated in the centre of then page. The text creates mystery and suspense as the last line states "a year later their footage was found".  I liked this as it makes the audience believe that what they are seeing actually happened adding to the overall horror of the poster and the movie.

Something that also stands out is the symbol just above the text. The colour of red can have many connotations for the audience including death, blood and violence. Also the symbol has no attached meaning to it meaning the audience are left in the dark and left wondering if the symbol has anything to do with the rest of the film.

The image of the trees at the top seem to be decayed and dying which adds to the scary and creepy vibe that the poster generates.

I really liked the colour scheme of the poster. The use of black and white is very common for the horror genre. The colour connotes death and mystery gripping the audience into the movie.

Overall i really liked this poster because of its simplicity and its way of causing unrest and intrigue at the same time. In terms of colour use this is defiantly something that i will come back to so that in my own poster i can utilise the best colours.

Research into similar products: Moonlight

The one aspect that immediately jumped out to me about this poster is its simplicity. The poster looks more like a teaser poster because it doesn't give much a way in terms of information but this simplistic design just manages to create more interest and anticipation for the movie without giving away to much of the movies story.

I also very much like the tagline of the movie. "This is the story of a lifetime".  I thought that this was a really effective tagline as much like the rest of the poster it doesn't tell the audience much about the story but instead creates intrigue telling the audience that they do not want want to miss this movie as it is going to be something spectacular and once in a lifetime. The audience are constantly left considering what could make the movie so interesting and so this would make the audience want to go out and learn more about the movie and so becoming more emotional invested in the movie.

One aspect i thought was very effective was the direct mode of address where the subject of the poster is looking directly at the audience connecting with them and also making the audience feel as though that they are part of the story.

Furthermore i really liked how the poster is split into three different images and all three showing different filters on each of the different images. I really like the split down the middle as it is something that is really unique and helps the poster to stand out immensely.  I think this type of design is something that i will come back to in terms of design and the way the poster is split as i think it is something that makes the poster what it is. I very much liked how the person who is split is shown through different stages of his life.

The title of the movie is situated at the bottom of the page so that the audience can take in the rest of the page. It is also situated in original font that allows the title to stand out and attract the audience into looking at the poster.

Organisation: Change to the shoot dates.

Due to the extreme weather that hit Birmingham over the weekend i was unable to do the shooting on the day i wanted as it just would of been impossible to get up the location so my only other option was to change the date of the filming. I instead changed the date to Tuesday the 12th of December.  These dates will be used to film all the scenes that involve the licky hills.

Hopefully this shooting date will go as planned and will enable me to shoot half of the trailer. The call sheet that was made a couple of nights ago will still apply to these dates.

Organisation: Editing software

To ensure that my trailer looks ands feels like an actual i wanted to use an editing software that i knew and understand and a software that could do all of the task that i needed it to with ease and not be too over complicated.
So because of this i decided to use the editing software called movie plus by serif. This software enables me to edit and add sound effects and music simpler and easier making the whole process much more easier in terms of making the trailer itself. Another reason why i chose this particular editing software was that i have had prior experience with this software editing a short movie so i have some knowledge of the system making everything much easier.

Organisation: Going over the script with the main actor.

Before i started to shoot my trailer i thought it was very important that i went over the script with my actor to see his thoughts and any ideas he had for the trailer. I also wanted to ensure that Adam had a firm idea of the script so that he knew what he was doing and had a basic idea of what i wanted to achieve from him.
To ensure this i went through the script page by page to go through the dialogue so that i and Adam knew what was best way to perform the lines. This was so that when it came to the actual filming stage of the trailer Adam would know if i wanted any accents or body language so that when it came to the actual shoot of the movie he would already know what to do and we can just jump straight in.

When necessary i made some changes and notes around the script to ensure that the script was in the best possible position for filming.

With the feedback i have received from the actors and my teacher i now know the required improvements that will need to be featured and improved so that the script is perfect for filming and the actors.

Organisation: Call sheet

To ensure that the filming of my trailer is well done and well organised it was imperative to create a call sheet so that i and the actors had the basic outline of what i expected and what i want to achieve from the filming shoots.
I did try and keep the scenes in order of how they would appear on the trailer just so that come to the editing stage it will be alot easier. As i said i only have 5 scenes to shoot from this location this is of course not all of the scenes that will appear in my trailer just the ones from this location so call sheets for other days and locations will be created.
Keeping the weather it does look like it has been forecasted rain or snow, while i do believe the rain or snow could actually add to the trailer if it becomes to bad then it will have to be rearranged due to the obvious reasons but the British weather is very much unpredictable so these forecasts may not happen.
I plan to shoot from 11 in the morning till 3 in the afternoon giving me four hours to get these shots done as well as any extra scenes that i my find i want or need when up there.

Monday, 4 December 2017

Organisation: Shooting dates.

After going through what ever day may be best for the actors to shoot i came up with the 9th and 10th of December. I decided to shoot on these days because first of all it is on the weekend so therefore i and the actors will be free to shoot for as long as necessary. Furthermore by shooting on the weekend i will be more free and have more creative elements as if i were to shoot in the week i would not have as much time to be able to do it.

Using the dates specified i can now create a call sheet for my actors describing the locations and the shots for the shoots of the day. I am pretty sure that all of the necassary footage will be able to be recorded on these dates, if not however i can easily get my actors together again to shoot the necessary scenes.

There however more days that will be used for recording days just for different settings and locations that will be needed etc. I will add these in at a later date when the known date is finalised.

Drafting and planning- Final script

This is my final script for the trailer. From this i do not intend to make any changes and if i do make changes then the changes will be documented so that i have a record of any changes that were made.

Organisation: Props

Of course as you know i decided to get some props to enhance the look and feel of the trailer. As you know the main props i wanted to get was two different types of masks one for the ring leader of the cult and a mask for main group. My main aim for wanting to use the masking was so that the antagonists looked more scary and also so that the audience won't be able to make an emotional connection with them, making the characters seem more scary and intimidating.

Now that these masks have been ordered and have arrived i can finally start the production and filming of my trailer.

Drafting and planning: Characterisation

As you can see in this blog post i have gone through the characterisation of my main character for the trailer.

As you can see i have gone through the characters age and his main characteristics. Roman is young and determined and wants to finish his fathers work to avenge him but to also take part

Roman Alexander is 18 and was raised in care after his fathers death and taken in by family after family messing with his mind and turning his life to drugs and bad things but the note that his fathers leaves him about his work gives him the wake up call that he so desperately needs to change his life around and also do something meaningful.

Roman first takes up the task his father started in trying to uncover who this group is but ends up in getting caught and taken by the group.

Roman wants nothing more then to be able to connect with his father.

Research into the potential target audience: Film title typography.

I sent an image to the people of my target audience to see what they thought of the different fonts that i had come up with. Before sending the photo i gave them a brief input into the plot and then showed them an image of the fonts and asked what they thought was best.

Drafting and planning: Film title typography

After finally deciding that the title of my trailer will be called "Beneath the shadows" which i believe perfectly sums up the narrative of the film and also generates that eerie feel that should occur in a horror film. As of course with any trailer the film will be displayed to the audience at the end of the trailer so for me it is imperative that i find the perfect font that can correlate back to the plot of the trailer and connect to it and also add to it. To try and decide what i wanted i did some research and looked into various fonts. These are my initial ideas:

As you can see i have gathered together 5 different fonts that i could use for my title each varying in design. This is however just a first look into fonts and so it could change depending on what else i find.
Additionally i also want to add a little colour to the title as seen below just to add a little intrigue and colour to the page.

As you can see i had the idea to colour the last word in the title a dark red colour, i believe that by doing this it looks a little more intriguing and mysterious but also links perfectly to the fact that my trailer has the genre of horror as the red in the title would connote with the idea of blood and death.

My thoughts:

Font 1) The font is nice and bold and can catch the attention of the audience. I like how the first letter of the title is a different font. It gives the title a really nice, creepy feel that i believe would engage the audience because of the fact that it stands out.
Font 2)  I did like this font due to how well it stands out, I like the design and how it looks hand written giving it a really creepy vibe.
Font 3) This is a font that i did really like due to its simplicity and thats exactly what i like, it isn't too flashy but is instead simple and effective.
Font 4) This font is very much like font 2, the font has that really creepy tone that connotes perfectly with the genre of horror.
Font 5) I picked out this font because i really liked its slickness. I like how it is in a border and just looks really cool, i believe that this type of font would fit perfectly not just on the trailer but also on the poster.

To get a good idea of what font would better represent the trailer i create i will show the target audience the fonts and see what they believe is the best.

I personally really like font 5 and font 2 and 1, i believe that these fonts best depict what i am trying create with my trailer.

Organisation: Potential editing/camera technique /shot.

When thinking of how i can make my trailer as creepy as possible i found this really creepy image.  This shot is something that i am heavily considering for including in my own trailer.
Especially considering how i am going to have my antagonists masked i thought that doing this type of pose would really add to the overall feel of the trailer giving it an element of creepiness and horror.
Because of the whole look of the image and it toking very memorable and unique it is also an image that i could recreate for the poster and/or the magazine.
Obviously i will have too recreate this image within my trailer to do it and after consulting with my teacher on how i could pull it off i came up with the perfect solution on how to pull it off.
What i want to achieve with this shot in my trailer is fairly simple. When the shot appears on the screen i will just have the one figure but after a stinger music sounds and a flash on the screen appears then the rest of the figures will appear on the screen.
To get this done  will do something really simple i film in reverse , by this i mean that i will shoot the shot with all the figures in so that everyone is in the perfect position and then shoot the shot with just the one figure and then put them all together in the editing stage to to finish the job adding in the sting and flash. Again this is a shot i definitely want to include on my trailer just because of its uniqueness and the fact that it is a shot that would almost certainly stand out within the trailer and be the shot that is most remembered.

Research into similar products: The babadook trailer

Camera work:
The trailer for the babadook uses a large variety of camera angles. The camera angles that were used in the trailer go a long way in making the movie effective as a horror.
The trailer uses medium shots especially on the empty stairs and empty rooms. The effectiveness of this allows the trailer to make it seem as though there is something stirring there something the audience can't see and so they expect something to happen.

Camera composition is also used very effectively in the trailer. The shot to the left is slightly out of focus and so therefore seems more frantic and also more spooky.  The shot seems very effective because of the mothers facial expression being one of fear but also looking as though she has been possessed creating a more creepy and mysterious feel to the trailer.

Mise en scene:
For the most part of the trailer the trailer is set in a house which is very typical of a horror movie as the home is meant to be the safe place for people but the trailer instead flips this and manages to make the home scary and on edge as normally these aspects of life would not typically be associated with being scary which only makes the audience more on edge.
The trailer is also very effective with its lightening. The trailer uses something known as makanan lightening known as the use of black and white lightening. It is used to cast shadows within the trailer  and also fading lights which may hint at fading hope.
Props are also used in the trailer very effectively and the main ones are the book and the knife.

Editing:
The editing of this trailer is a type of non-linear representation for the film. The editing is used to enhance the colours of the film and applying the special effects for the film. In most of the scenes of the trailer the scenes seem to have been desaturated in colour making the scene seem more dark and mysterious but also to make it seem that there is a bad force in the scene that could appear and telling the audience what type of movie this is.
One thing that i really about this trailer was its use of inter-titles. The way that they are used means that they link to the trailer perfectly as they are torn up pieces of paper and are edited to fall perfectly into place.

Sound:
The trailer uses both diagetic and non diagetic sound. Screaming is used very effectively in the trailer creating a more harrowing and intense moment for the trailer.  The non diagetic sound used in the trailer is used in the form of turning pages sounds which is linked to the idea of the book being haunted and being able to create a horror atmosphere.

Research into similar products: Blair witch project: trailer

At the start of the trailer i liked how there was no footage from the film but instead there was just narration clearly from a distressed women who is crying and is saying sorry to peoples moms for her mistake. I thought that this was effective as it shrouded the trailer in mystery as the audience can't see what is going on they can only hear what the narrator is saying which adds mystery to the trailer.

Furthermore, I very much liked how this particular trailer opened. Instead of the usual studio films coming up it instead featured some background information regarding the movie. By only adding this to the start of the trailer the film seems more realistic to the audience as instead of a film it is more depicted as a documentary which overall makes the movie seem more creepy and horrific as we the audience are lead to believe that what is happening actually happened. I really liked how this trailer started, it was unique and different and added a whole new layer of meaning, story telling and depth to the movie. This is something that i will look at in my own trailer because right at the start the audience are lead to believe that this is something that they have never seen before.

What i liked about this trailer was that it does not say much about the film which builds anticipation for the film as the audience do not not know what to expect.
The sound in the trailer is something that is done perfectly. Throughout the music is building up which effectively builds up the anticipation and makes the audience feel as though something big and scary is about to happen which it doesn't which brings the audience into a false sense of scary.

After the text appears on screen the shots that do follow are filtered in the colour of black and white and is mostly used in hand held camera style. This i believe is very effective as it furthers the idea that what the movie is showing is real and is in the form of a documentary instead of a film.  This then, builds the anticipation and also the creepiness of the trailer as the audience does not know what to expect.  The editing in this scene is fairly slow which is quite unconventional of a horror film as there is usually more jump scares but adding this technique is also really effective as the audience is constantly expecting something but it never occurs causing the audience to be on edge.

The final shot of the trailer is something that i really liked. The quick cut reveals an extreme close up of one of the students showing her intense fear to the audience which may cause discomfort and distress as the audience is left wondering what has happened. The shot also reinforces the idea of it being a hand held camera and a documentary instead of a film which displays the characters vunerrabilty in the scene.

Drafting and planning: Feedback from pitch

Feedback from the trailer pitch:

After doing my pitch to the class, the class and my teacher all gave me feedback on what they thought of my idea with them talking about the positives and how maybe i could improve my idea so that i create the best trailer that i can. What i was most proud of from the pitch was that my target audience seemed to like the idea calling it a 'unique and original' idea which is something i am very happy about as it only means that i am on the right tracks.

Positive feedback that i received:
  • "Idea is unique and original and shows you know your narrative inside out".
  • "Good connection between the use of the props and the plot"- (masks)
  • "A really compelling idea"
  • "Very relevant and relates to the genre of horror and thriller"
These being just some of the positives i got from the pitch i was really happy as it meant that clearly i am doing something good and i am on the right tracks and gave me an insight. As well as receiving those positives i got some feedback which will only act to help me and that was feedback in how i could possibly make the trailer better.

Feedback for how to improve my trailer:
  • "How will i show that that the trailer takes place in the future"
  • "Alot of content, could be simpler"
  • "How can you match the montage scenes could relate to the story"
  • "Will the location all be shot indoors"
The main comment that i received from my peers is how i would be able to create the trailer in a futuristic sense considering i said that my film would take place in the year 2050. As this comment came up several times i did realise that it would be quite unrealistic for the plot to be set in this time frame as it would be easier to do just do it in the current time frame.
Now that i have received this feedback from my peers i can begin to start the processing of filming now that i have a much clearer idea on how my trailer will come together.

Drafting and Planning: Movie trailer pitch

To make sure that we are ready to make our movie trailer and to ensure that our trailer is on the right tracks and is actually something that can be created. Above is the pitch that i created going through the genre that i want the my trailer to be. I also went for the age rating of what my project will be. I went through the entirety of the plot from start to finish.
I also decided to look into props that i wanted to use, and who my main character will be in the film. Including a first draft of how i expect the trailer to go by including the first draft of the storyboard.

Organisation: Main character

When thinking of films an aspect that most people will remember the main character. The main character can make the movie and pull everything together. The main character is the central focal point of the movie and is in most cases what the story will be revolved around.

It is important that I make the main character is relevant to the story, genre and target audience it needs to be able to relate to the audience but also engage and captivate them.

That is when i came to the decision to cast Adam Tooley as the main character for my trailer, Adam understands perfectly what i am trying to create and because of his passion for acting and film especially shown by him taking drama for A-level i know he will give the best possible performance making the trailer instantly better.

Adam will be the best choice for the role because he fits the target audience role and so would be able to draw in the audience in who could relate to the main character. Adam would also fit the bill of the main character because of him being 17.

By picking Adam for my role i know i will get the best i can possibly get and so enhance the feel and look of my own trailer.

Research into similar products: Movie poster: "The exorcist"

One thing that really stands out to me on this poster is its layout. Everything is really spaced out and is really simplistic, this kind of approach leaves more to the imagination for the audience.

Colour is also very well done in the poster and is definitely something that i will take inspiration from. I very much like how the majority of the poster is in black with the only features of any of colour being white and it being centered around the only figure on the page. This type of editing really does fit in with the genre of the movie as it whole, giving a chilling and mysterious vibe.

The text on the page is really simple. Each text isn't an extreme or flashy font but instead is really simple giving it that more chilling tone. I also really liked how the all the text bar one piece is in white sticking to the whole colour scheme. The title is the only thing that is different in terms of colour, size, and font. It really draws more eyes towards it making it stand out more. The purple really fits in well with the horror genre.

The tagline that is accompanied with the poster at the top of the page is a really effective feature. "The scariest movie of all time has returned". This will grip the audiences as people who have seen it before will want to see what has changed as well as new audiences wanting to find out what it is all about.  I like how there is a lack of information given away to the audience adding to the intrigue of the movie as a whole.

One thing that i can definatly say will inspire when creating my own movie poster is the main image of the figure and how the light is shining on him clearly showing his importance to the story and the audience but also giving a really mysterious tone to him like who is he. I like how is represented as being in black because of the light just adding to that really mysterious vibe.

Organisation: Locations

For any film and so effectively trailer to actually work it needs to shot at a location. It is important that the location fits the genre of what is going on and in some circumstances can actually add to a scene. In this post i will be looking at some of the locations i plan to film at.

Location 1: 'The lickies castle':
My first location that i have picked out is the location known as the lickies castle. I like how the castle has that 'ruined' look that gives it eerie vibe and to give a good backdrop or even main setting. This particular piece of setting could be used for the main antagonists main area and hideaway.

Location 2: 'Graveyard':
My second known location that i will be filming at as the local graveyard and surrounding areas. This is the type of setting that will fit in perfectly with the genre of my trailer (horror/thriller) it will create a chilling and creepy tone to the movie especially if shot at night.
